Marie Kondo: “Keep only books that bring joy to you, ideally 30.”
So I walked to the first 30 books on my shelf. They all cheerfully bobbled like golden retriever puppies. My heart was pumped with joy. I decided to keep them.
Then I walked to the next 30 books, most of which were my top favorites.
“Do you bring me joy, Animal Farm?”
The tiny book stared at me with sarcasm and irony.
“Do you bring me joy, Lord of the Rings, one-volume edition?”
Gollum jumped out of the book, squatted in front of me, and hauntingly whispered ‘Precious’.
“Do you bring me joy, Fahrenheit 451?”
“People are literally burning books here, what do you think?”
“Do you bring me joy, Dune?”
“One of your favorite characters dies.”
“Do you bring me joy, Harry Potter? All seven of you?”
“Dumbledore, Snape, Fred, Lupin, Tonks, Cedric, Sirius, Hedwig, Moody, Dobby, Hagrid’s chickens,” they all screamed in unison.
“Do you bring me joy, 1984?
“What’s wrong with you, prole?”
“Do you bring me joy, Maus?
“Bruh, just stop.”
My dark heart was pumped with more joy. I decided to keep them too.
